It's origin dates back to a time when Peoria, Illinois was known
in the theatrical groups for being a very hard crowd to please. |

Peoria wasn't a large city at the time, working class Peorian's
were seemingly critical of the venues and events that appeared
in their modest midwest town. Directors, and writers would often
travel great distances to try out new material...just to see
if it would play in Peoria. If it did,
it was considered that it was not only ready for Broadway, but
that it would likely play anywhere. Even today, the phrase is
still quoted regularly in media and across the Internet. |
